Program Summary:

In this first of a four (4) part educational webcast series we will hear from Dr. Emanuel Kanal from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center who will share his experience and knowledge on MR Safety as it relates Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) in Gadolinium Based Contrast Agents (GCBAs.
In this lecture, Dr. Kanal reviews the available gadolinium based contrast agents (GCBAs), their chemical properties and discusses how their design can impact their clinical utility and safety in various clinical applications.
Following his lecture, Dr. Lawrence N. Tanenbaum joins Dr. Kanal in a live panel discussion moderated by Applied Radiology where questions from the audience are answered.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the transmetallation theory and how administration of GBCA might result in the subsequent development of NSF in patients with significantly impaired renal function.
  • Understand various clinical and empiric epidemiological observations that appear inconsistent with or even at odds with the theory of transmetallation.
  • Understand other possible rationale(s) to explain the apparent discrepant clinical findings with the theory of transmetallation and NSF development.
