Program Summary:
In this episode, Dr. Semelka introduces MRI in regard to detect the presence of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. He describes how to diagnose hepatitis C cirrhosis and how to appreciate the presence of fibrosis and metastases. He illustrates a case of neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas and discusses some of the hallmarks of hypervascular liver metastases.
Also presented are imaging techniques that he finds useful to detect the presence of ascites caused by liver cirrhosis and the presence of an enhancing tumor thrombus in portal vein. Lastly, he demonstrates a case in which MRI of the abdomen can be instrumental in determining the presence Focal Nodular Hyperplasia in a young woman.
Case 1: Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Metastasis. This patient has multifocal Hepatocellular carcinoma with right adrenal metastases and acute bone metastasis; the ability of MRI to evaluate the full extent of disease is emphasized. (FREE Preview Provided)
Case 2: Neuroendocrine Tumor with Liver Metastases. This is a case of a patient with neuroendocrine tumor in the neck region of the pancreas and hypervascular liver metastasis.
Case 3: Cirrhosis with Massive Ascites. MRI in liver cirrhosis and ascites is discussed and is emphasized the ability of MRI to differentiate the different causes of ascites.
Case 4: Diffuse Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Tumor Thrombus. Enhancing tumor thrombus in a setting of diffuse hepatocellular carcinoma.
Case 5: Focal Nodular Hyperplasia Studied with Liver. This is a case of a young woman with a benign lesion consistent with Focal Nodular Hyperplasia.
Approximate Episode Run Time: 61 Minutes
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity participants will have a better understanding of the following:
• How to construct an MR protocol to fit the patient and clinical questions
• Which MR imaging tools can benefit your review of MRI cases
• Circumstances that can help or hinder your review
• Making the final diagnosis
Claiming CE Credit:
To receive CME credits for participating in this activity you must view the program, successfully complete the online post examination and the following evaluation. Online examinations return an immediate grade report. Upon receiving a passing grade of 70% or higher, a letter of credit will be available for printing and indefinitely available in your “MyAR” Archives.
